🎨 Did You Know Cleveland Invented Modern Paint?
You’ve definitely seen the Sherwin-Williams logo - those giant letters glowing over downtown like they’re part of the weather forecast.
But have you ever wondered why one of the biggest paint companies in the world calls Cleveland home?
Here’s the story.

Back in 1866, a bookkeeper named Henry Sherwin teamed up with a guy named Edward Williams (and a guy name Alanson Osborn), and together they opened a tiny paint business right here in Cleveland.
At the time, painting was basically a messy chemistry experiment. You had to mix your own pigments and oils and just sort of hope it didn’t peel off by spring.
Can you imagine the headaches, the mess, the inconsistency? No wonder everything was wallpapered back then. 😂😱
These two thought there had to be a better way.
So they created pre-mixed paint - ready to use, resealable, and reliable. It was a game-changer for everyone from homeowners to professional painters, and it caught on fast. (If you’ve ever seen your uncle mixing five half-empty cans in his garage, you understand why this was revolutionary.)
Built for Builders
Cleveland has always been a maker’s city - steelworkers, carpenters, machinists, painters - people who build things that last. Sherwin-Williams grew up right alongside that grit, and they never left.
While other companies packed up and moved, they stayed here, hiring locals and helping shape the look of the city itself.
And on a personal note? My first job out of college was at Sherwin-Williams. I worked as an in-home decorating consultant, as well as behind the counter.
As a carpenter’s granddaughter, I was unreasonably proud to be the one mixing gallons at the paint store where all the pros shopped - the same kind of folks who built this city.
Quick History Hits:
In its early years, Sherwin-Williams bought a former cooperage (barrel-making plant) in Cleveland and turned it into its first factory for paint manufacturing.
In 1875 the company introduced ready-mixed paint, which changed the game for homeowners and contractors alike.
By the 1920s the company was the largest coatings manufacturer in the U.S., with plants, dealerships and a footprint that stretched well beyond Ohio.
During World War I, the company’s growth exploded: between 1900 and 1919 sales rose from $2.3 million to $34.2 million while the firm expanded manufacturing, chemicals, and dealer networks.
In 1982 they developed a computer-based color matching system that’s les to what is now the standard in all paint manufacturers and retailers.
Into the 21st century, the company committed to keeping its headquarters in downtown Cleveland - announcing a $600 million investment in a new global HQ and R&D campus right in the heart of the city.

Still Here, Still Coloring the Map
Fast-forward 160 years, and Sherwin-Williams is still Cleveland to the core. Their new headquarters downtown is a shiny reminder that some hometown legends don’t just make history - they keep showing up for it.
And if you look around, you’ll see their fingerprints everywhere: the restored buildings, the murals, the neighborhoods that got a fresh coat instead of being forgotten.
Building More Than Walls
Sherwin-Williams isn’t just part of Cleveland’s skyline - it’s part of the city’s workforce story. Over the decades, the company has employed thousands of Northeast Ohioans in everything from manufacturing and research to design and logistics.
Their downtown headquarters, regional distribution centers, and local production facilities have provided steady, skilled jobs for generations of Cleveland families.
And with their new global headquarters and research campus underway, they’re not slowing down - the investment is bringing even more high-paying jobs, construction projects, and long-term stability to the region. It’s one of those rare stories where a global brand keeps its roots planted right where it started - still hiring locally, still helping Cleveland grow.
This Month, They’re Getting Their Flowers (or… Paintbrushes?)
On November 13, the Rotary Club of Cleveland is giving Sherwin-Williams its Community Impact Award - a nod to a company that helped color this city, literally and figuratively.
And it’s so well-earned.
So next time you drive past their shiny new headquarters give it a little salute and say thanks. It’s not just a paint company - it’s one of Cleveland’s longest-running love stories between hard work, innovation, and a really good shade of red.
And I, for one, am proud to have been one small part of that story. 🥲🥰
