Coffee, Chaos, and Laura Coy: A Mother’s Day Moment

From sweet tea to snow boots—how one North Carolina native is raising kids, making waves, and surviving Ohio winters like a pro 😲✅

Laura Coy’s journey to Northeast Ohio started on a military deployment in Djibouti, Africa, where she met her now-husband and business partner, Ryan.

After finishing active duty with the Air Force, she packed up her life in Vegas—kids and all—blended their families together, and moved to Ohio where Ryan grew up and was still serving in the Navy Reserves.

From those roots they built a new chapter rooted in family, entrepreneurship, and a deep respect for collaboration over competition.

“They say it takes a village to raise a child. It also takes a village to raise a business.”

The result is Pro Precise Property Inspections, the #1 property inspection company in Akron! They’ve built the company up from nothing, into an NEO powerhouse that handles every aspect of inspections, and they lead with integrity.

Whether she's jumping on the trampoline with her kids or scheduling a home inspection, Laura brings her full self to everything she does—especially her business and their six…count ‘em—SIX kids.

She’s a bundle of bubbly, but no-nonsense energy, and her experience as a veteran shows in every aspect of her life.

I sat down with Laura over a cup of coffee to get the inside scoop on her perspective of Ohio, coming from a true North Carolina native:

Q: What’s your go-to habit/hobby when you need a serotonin boost?

A: I like being outdoors when it's sunny. So if the sun is shining, I’ll go weed outside…I love to jump on the trampoline with the kids, or just take a walk. But I would say that part of it is watching my kids. Like watching Bella cheer, watching RJ play soccer, that kind of thing. That’s where my joy is.

Q: What’s Your Favorite dish in Northeast Ohio, and where to get it?

A: Anything to do with short ribs at Gervasi Vineyard. I know it's good, it's consistent. It's always a good time. We love it there.

Q: What’s one thing you love about living in NEO?

A: Not that the sports teams are always great, but I love sports. We’re a sports family, and I love that Northeast Ohio has literally every sports team. Whatever you're into, whatever the season is, there's a sports team playing. I think it's fun to take the kids to it, but this is the only place that I have lived out of all the places I lived in the military that has had every single one.

Q: Which local small biz do you love shouting out?

A:  Skoops in Barberton! I like that they have tons of options. So, gluten free, dairy free, sugar free…they've got it covered! And they've got the pup cups.

They keep it creative there, and as a business owner, watching how they run their business and take care of their employees is amazing. They've closed down because there were bad stores coming and they're like, ‘We care about our people.’ AND they care about the community…they care about customer service, all of it. And it starts with them viewing their employees as their customers and taking care of them. And I just love that.

Q: What’s the most Ohio thing ever?

A: The “season” of road construction! I grew up in North Carolina so this is new to me. And everybody actually refers to it as a season! Which means your 10 minute drive could wind up being a 25 minute drive, but only this time of year, and only in this area. Yeah, that's very Ohio.

Q: What's one piece of advice you have for others who want to successfully build a business in Northeast Ohio?

A: I think one thing that sticks out to me is that we've always been about collaboration over competition. We're friends with so many other Home Inspection companies, and we love talking to them. So I think that that's one thing.

Also, look for a mentor. Find somebody that's out there that's doing what you want to do, and ask the question, ‘will you be my mentor?’ I think that's a big thing. Learn from other people that have already been there and succeeded. I don't want to reinvent anything.

Also, do things your way. Stay true to who you are and what makes sense for you. What works for me is not going to work for somebody else. What works for them doesn't work for me. So just be very authentic and the right people will always embrace you and help you build a network—which is also key. Build a network of people that you trust! People you can go to to celebrate with, and also get advice from. They say it takes a village to raise a child. It also takes a village to raise a business.

Q: Is there anything else you want people to know about you or your business?

A: My business is my family, my family is my business.

So the kids are involved with so much of it. They enjoy it. They go out to some of the marketing stuff. They fill folders for us. They help with marketing ideas. I use that as part of their education.

My teammates too—they're an extension of my family. So we joke around together, we grow together. We support each other and celebrate together. We bring people onto the team and the question is do you fit into my family here? Especially because we’re a small business, which means so many of the team meetings are at my house, and my kids are there. We’re all one big family and it means everything to me.

Life is certainly never calm for Laura and Ryan. In fact, they’ve embraced the hashtag #chaoticallycoy ….but they wouldn’t have it any other way. 🥰
