📚 The National First Ladies’ Library & Education Center (Canton)
Dedicated to honoring the lives and legacies of America’s First Ladies, this understated but fascinating site offers exhibits on all 46 First Ladies, including Rosalynn Carter and Jackie Kennedy. A great way to appreciate the often-overlooked women behind the presidents.
(Be sure to tour the gorgeous Saxton House next door where President McKinley lived with his wife’s family! I used to be a tour guide there and it’s a beautifully restored Victorian home that really helps you understand the opulence of the era. - Amy)
🦅 Garfield Monument (Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland)
This impressive mausoleum honors James A. Garfield, the 20th U.S. president and Ohio native. The monument’s Romanesque Revival style and stained glass windows make it one of Cleveland’s most beautiful—and often missed—historic sites.
🗽William McKinley National Memorial (Canton)
One of Ohio’s grandest structures, this white granite mausoleum honors President William McKinley, the nation’s 25th president. The grounds are serene and perfect for a quiet reflective walk, with detailed plaques and statues sharing McKinley’s legacy.
⚖️ Ohio Statehouse (Columbus)
Though technically outside NEO, the Ohio Statehouse is well worth a mention, and worth the drive. This Greek Revival marvel hosts the state government and offers free guided tours where you can learn about Ohio’s role in the nation’s founding and see the Senate and House chambers up close - just be sure to schedule ahead of time for the full tour.
👨🌾 The Hale Farm & Village (Bath Township)
Step back into the 19th century at this living history museum where you can tour a preserved pioneer village, see blacksmiths and farmers at work, and even try your hand at crafts. It’s a hands-on way to experience Ohio’s early settler days.

🪻 The James A. Garfield National Historic Site (Mentor)
Visit the home of President Garfield, preserved with original furnishings and surrounded by beautiful gardens. It’s a peaceful spot to learn about his tragic assassination and honor his life.
⛵ Soldiers and Sailors Monument (Public Square, Cleveland)
Rising from Cleveland’s Public Square, this Civil War monument honors Cuyahoga County’s Union veterans with dramatic sculptures and a beautiful interior museum. Built in 1894, it’s both a piece of history and a powerful tribute to those who fought to preserve the nation.
Bonus: The USS Cod Submarine Memorial (Cleveland)
Though not a monument to presidents or politicians, the USS Cod is a WWII-era submarine preserved as a museum on Cleveland’s lakefront. It’s an impressive, hands-on experience to honor veterans and America’s naval history.
